DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Symptoms Depending on the stage and control of the diabetes, the affect of diabetic retinopathy on vision varies widely and may include these symptoms: Blurred vision Floaters and flashes Sudden loss of vision Other eye symptoms Frequently Asked Questions How does diabetes affect the eyes? Diabetes can cause several problems in the eyes from glaucoma to hemorrhages and swelling in the back of the eyes, to blindness. Could diabetes cause changes in my vision from day to day? Yes. Fluctuating blood sugars can cause your vision to change very frequently. Is there treatment for diabetic complications of the eyes? Yes. There are laser treatments that can stabilize your vision by slowing or preventing blood vessel growth. These treatments will not necessarily improve your vision. Some patients may need medication injected directly into the eye while others may need surgery, particularly if the diabetic changes progress despite laser or injection treatment. You can help prevent the progression of diabetic eye disease by having routine dilated exams to catch any changes early before vision is lost. What can I do to prevent diabetic eye disease? The best way to maintain your eye health is through good control of your blood sugars, blood pressure and cholesterol. Keep your regular eye appointments with Drs. Agnone and Morrison so they can diagnose and treat any diabetic complications as soon as possible. How often should I see Drs. Agnone and Morrison? The frequency of examinations depends on how well you control your diabetes and whether your are experiencing diabetic eye problems. Drs. Agnone and Morrison will give you their recommendation during your examination; however, diabetics should have at LEAST one dilated eye exam per year. |
