Frequently Asked Questions

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of disorders that lead to high pressure inside the eye and damage to the optic nerve at the back of the eye. Untreated, glaucoma can result in vision loss. Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness worldwide.

What are the different types of glaucoma?
There are two main types of glaucoma -- open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma. Closed angle glaucoma is a sudden blockage that prevents fluid from draining out of the eye, resulting in a painful rise in the pressure within the eye. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common type of glaucoma, is slowly progressive. Both types of glaucoma will progress to vision loss and permanent blindness if left untreated.

How do I know if I have glaucoma?
Many patients do not know they have glaucoma because often there are no symptoms until the disease is quite advanced. Make an appointment today with Drs. Agnone and Morrison to evaluate whether or not you have glaucoma.

If I am told I am a “glaucoma suspect”, what does that mean?
A “glaucoma suspect” is a patient who has risk factors for glaucoma but inconclusive findings from the eye exam. In this case, Drs. Agnone and Morrison may choose to monitor rather than treat for glaucoma.

If I am told I have glaucoma, what does this mean?
Glaucoma is a threat to your vision. With routine exams and care, it can usually be kept under control. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma or are a suspect for glaucoma, you need to keep your regular visits with Drs. Agnone and Morrison and follow a treatment plan carefully.

Is there treatment for glaucoma?
Drs. Agnone and Morrison will discuss with you the various treatments available. The choice of eye drops, laser treatments or surgery depends on your specific situation.
