Parkinson’s disease is degenerative condition that affects a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. Over time, neurons are damaged or destroyed and physical movement is gradually limited. While Parkinson’s is primarily characterized by tremors, rigidity, and instability, it can also affect vision. Common visual symptoms include dry eyes, blurred and double vision, uncontrolled eye movements, light sensitivity, eyestrain, and difficulty looking down, which can make it difficult to use bifocals for reading or eating. These abnormalities are often missed during routine eye exams. Because these symptoms can further reduce a Parkinson’s patient quality of life and functionality, they warrant specialized treatment.
