Alzheimer’s Disease and Associated Vision Problems

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. This prevalent condition damages and destroys connections between neural cells in the brain. The main cause is a build up of abnormal accumulations of β-amyloid protein (Ab) in the form of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of aggregated tau protein.

The retinal nerve fiber layer of the eye thins out in Alzheimer’s disease. The neurons responsible for processing vision often are damaged, resulting in ambiguous vision symptoms in the early stages of the disease. These abnormalities can be missed on a routine eye exam and may cause a patient to have problems recognizing objects, seeing colors, and processing motion. These vision problems increase the risk of accidents.

The genetic and environmental causes of this disease are the subject of ongoing research. Early research indicates that sophisticated equipment, like that available at Agnone, Morrison and Associates, Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Inc will aid in early detection and help monitor the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Further research is needed, however, before such techniques can be fully utilized in a clinical setting.

The office of Agnone, Morrison and Associates, Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Inc. is on the leading edge of diagnostics and treatment. Parkinson's Disease

ball-2585603_1920.jpg

Parkinson’s disease is degenerative condition that affects a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. Over time, neurons are damaged or destroyed and physical movement is gradually limited. While Parkinson’s is primarily characterized by tremors, rigidity, and instability, it can also affect vision. Common visual symptoms include dry eyes, blurred and double vision, uncontrolled eye movements, light sensitivity, eyestrain, and difficulty looking down, which can make it difficult to use bifocals for reading or eating. These abnormalities are often missed during routine eye exams. Because these symptoms can further reduce a Parkinson’s patient quality of life and functionality, they warrant specialized treatment.

Degenerative Brain Diseases Can Affect Your Vision

neurons-1773922_1920.jpg

Your eyes have a direct connection to your brain through the optic nerve and cells of the retina. While well-known age and genetic related eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, cause debilitating vision problems, other central nervous conditions including Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease can also affect your vision.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases may cause direct or retrograde degeneration of the optic nerve and retinal cells, which are critical to good vision. The brain and nerve changes caused by these conditions may reduce coordination, mobility, and vision. This can result in increased risks of falls and related injuries.
